Haskins Preserve at Camp Resolute
In May 2011, a 20-acre parcel of land that abuts Camp Resolute was purchased
to protect further development of the neighboring property located behind the
Smith Amphitheatre and Bryant Health Lodge.
The Knox Trail Council was able to acquire the land thanks to a bequest left in
the will of Joyce C. Haskins, a former volunteer with Troop 18 in Milford and a
volunteer staff member of the Algonquin and Knox Trail Councils. Joyce’s love of
Scouting and the outdoor experience that the Scouting program provides to Scouts
was tantamount in the decision to use her bequest to acquire the property.
On July 21, 2011, this 20 acre parcel of land was dedicated, in the memory of
Joyce Haskins, and it will be known from this day forward as the Haskins
Preserve at Camp Resolute. Development of the land is already underway with
Scouts clearing trails and working on Wilderness Survival Merit Badge by
building shelters and completing their overnight camping this summer camp
season. Additional trail clearing will continue throughout the summer. The land
has many historic stone walls and vernal pools providing even more opportunities
for outdoor education.
